Werder Bremen came through a high scoring match with Sampdoria in the play-offs to make it through to the Champions League group stages. After beating Sampdoria 3-1 in the first leg in Germany, Sampdoria romped into a 3-0 win in the return fixture. An injury time goal from substitute Markus Rosenberg took the tie to extra time where Claudio Pizarro got the all important goal which split the two sides.
As well as Claudio Pizarro, Bremen have a solid looking team with captain Torsten Frings pulling the strings in midfield and Germany international defender Per Mertesacker holding things together at the back.
