Stuttgart have made it through to the knockout stages of the Champions League for the second time in their history after progressing as Group G runners up behind Sevilla. A final matchday win against Unirea Urziceni was enough to see the Germans progress, just four days after they sacked manager Marcus Babbel and replaced him with former Spurs coach Christian Gross.
It was the third time Stuttgart had drawn Rangers in the competition and they feared a little better than the last time they played in the competition where they didn't make it past the group stages.

Stuttgart's slim chances of getting a result in the Camp Nou were undone early on as they lost out 4-0 to a Lionel Messi inspired Barcelona in the last sixteen.

Stuttgart had to come through the Champions League play-offs to make it into the group stages after finishing third in the Bundesliga last season, but they comfortably beat FC Timisoara over two legs to progress. The Germans needed to get past Rangers and Unirea Urziceni to make it out of Group G as runners up and in the end only qualified by one point from the Romanians.
Former start Alexander Hleb has returned on loan from Barcelona to Stuttgart this season and he is the hub of all things creative for the Germans. Veteran keeper Jens Lehman will be familiar to many whilst Thomas Hitzlsperger pulls the strings in the middle.
