Basel qualified for the Champions League group stages courtesy winning the Swiss Super League and while they have been a dominant force in Swiss football in recent years, progress in Europe has been somewhat slower.

Basel's talisman is undoubtedly the Swiss International Alexander Frei, who leads the line in attack. Frei is at his second spell at the club and has previous Champions League experience at Borussia Dortmund. Frei is partnered in attack by Swiss international Marco Streller who has been banging in the goals for Basel since 2007.
